On Friday night we joined a growing crowd of curious onlookers out at inspiration point, which afforded us a view of the "Cottonwood Fire," which is the latest conflagration to threaten the Idyllwild Area. In case you didn't know our home is situated squarely in the midst of a vast tinder box.From an initial report that the fire had consumed 20 acres, it quickly grew to 150 then 450 then 1200 and as of last night 2200 acres. At this time the fire, which is located 5 miles south-southwest of Idyllwild is only 10% contained, but mercifully the wind has shifted and is now pushing the fire away from Idyllwild. Outside it smells like burning mountain. I kind of like the smell.

Maybe there are some "more kind" descriptions of Idyllwild than "tinder box" - but then again maybe not in august.
